President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan has warmly welcomed the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (IMoU) between the United States and Iran, hailing it as a historic moment for the region and the world. In a statement released on Thursday, the president described the agreement as a crucial step toward ending a conflict that erupted in February 2026, which caused immense suffering and severely disrupted global energy supplies, trade, and economic stability.
President Zardari expressed hope that such a tragedy would never be repeated, urging nations in the region to redirect their energies toward development, prosperity, and well-being of their peoples. The conflict, which began in February 2026, had inflicted widespread humanitarian and economic damage, according to the president’s message. The paid tribute to Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi for their tireless diplomatic efforts. He noted that Pakistan played a principled, balanced, and constructive role throughout the crisis, consistently calling for dialogue, restraint, and a peaceful resolution while maintaining engagement with all parties. President Zardari also appreciated the leadership of US President Donald Trump, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for ensuring a diplomatic resolution. He further acknowledged the valuable support of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Egypt, Russia, and China, whose encouragement of dialogue contributed to the pursuit of peace. The president called on all parties to implement the IMoU fully and expedite efforts to reach a final agreement within the stipulated timeframe. “Heroes are those who have ended the war, not those who are eager to start one,” he said, emphasizing that the memorandum, which bears the mark of Islamabad and Pakistan, should serve as the foundation for a durable comprehensive peace.
