ISLAMABAD — On the occasion of International Day of Parliamentarism, a senior leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) has reaffirmed the party’s unwavering commitment to democratic institutions, honoring the sacrifices made by its founders to establish parliamentary rule in Pakistan.
Syed Nayyer Hussain Bukhari, Secretary General PPPP, issued a statement extending congratulations to democracy advocates worldwide, with a special focus on Pakistan. He highlighted the pivotal role of the Pakistan Peoples Party in shaping the nation’s constitutional history.
Bhutto Legacy and Democratic Struggle
Bukhari credited former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the party’s founder, with gifting the Constitution to a nation that previously lacked one. He described the struggle for democracy led by Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto as “historic, exemplary, and unforgettable.”
>“The leaders and workers of the Peoples Party sacrificed their lives to strengthen the parliamentary democratic system,” Bukhari said. “The Pakistan Peoples Party takes pride in being the founder of the parliamentary system in the country.”
Sacrifices for Democratic Continuity
The PPPP leader recalled that the Peoples Party, alongside other pro-democracy forces, endured imprisonment, physical punishment, and severe hardships in the fight to restore democracy. He emphasized that their collective struggle for the parliamentary system remains a model for democratic movements.
Bukhari attributed the current democratic continuity in Pakistan to the wisdom and foresight of President Asif Ali Zardari, as well as the sacrifices of democracy-loving citizens. He also praised Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, calling him the “hope of Pakistan” and an effective voice for the people within Parliament.
Pledge to Protect Parliamentary Institutions
Bukhari declared that preserving the dignity and respect of Parliament, which represents the aspirations of the Pakistani people, remains the top priority of the Peoples Party.
“We pledge to follow in the footsteps of the leaders who strengthened Parliament, the Constitution, and democracy with their blood,” he concluded.
